Which Photo Works Best for a Personalized Book?

By the Fablewish team Β· Updated November 3, 2026

In short: The best photo for a personalized book is a recent, sharp portrait of your child's face in daylight: looking at the camera, face clearly visible, no sunglasses, hats or heavy filters, and only your child in the picture. A normal phone photo is fine – it's the face that matters, not the camera.

The photo checklist

Works best Avoid
Face clearly visible, looking at the camera Profile shots, face turned away, eyes closed
Daylight or a bright room, even light Strong shadows, backlight, flash in the dark
Sharp, recent photo Blurry, very old, or tiny cropped images
Natural look Sunglasses, hats, face paint, heavy filters
Only your child in the picture Siblings, friends or pets next to the face
Head and shoulders Full-body shots from far away

Why the photo matters

Your child is illustrated from this one photo – face and hair – on every page of the book. A clear, front-facing photo gives the illustrations the most to work with. Eye color you choose separately, so it doesn't have to be visible in the photo.

Not sure? Just try it

The cover preview is free: upload a photo, see your child on the cover, usually in under a minute. If it doesn't look right, try another photo before you pay. You can also look at several cover options.

What happens to the photo

We use it only to create your preview and your book – never for advertising or to train AI models. Photos are reduced in size and camera location data is removed in your browser before upload. Photos without an order are deleted automatically within 30 days; for orders, within 60 days after shipping. Details: is it safe to upload my child's photo?
