Are AI Children's Books Any Good? What to Look For

By the Fablewish team Β· Updated November 3, 2026

In short: It depends on how AI is used. A book that's entirely machine-generated – story and pictures – is often flat and sometimes wrong. A book where people write the story and AI-assisted tools help illustrate your child into it can be very good: that's how photo-based personalized books work, including ours. The things to check: who wrote the story, whether every page is reviewed by a person, whether you can preview before paying, and what happens to your child's photo.

Three kinds of "AI children's books"

Kind What it is Our take
Fully generated An app writes the story and the pictures on the spot Often generic, sometimes odd pictures; rarely a story kids ask for again
AI-assisted illustration People write the story; AI tools illustrate the child into fixed scenes; a person checks every page This is what Fablewish does. The story quality comes from the writing; the AI makes personalization possible
Classic printed book Written and illustrated by people, no personalization Wonderful – and your child isn't in it

How Fablewish uses AI – honestly

  • The stories are written by us, for real moments in a child's life: picky eating, fear of the dark, time with Grandma. They don't change from child to child – only the hero does.
  • The illustrations are created with the help of AI-assisted tools: your child's photo is turned into an illustrated character in the style of the story, on every page.
  • Every page is checked before printing. Small differences from the photo – hairstyle, clothing – are part of the artistic interpretation.
  • You see the cover before you pay. If you don't like it, you can look at other cover options or simply not order.
  • Your child's photo is never used to train AI models and never for advertising. It's deleted automatically: within 30 days without an order, within 60 days after shipping. Details: is it safe to upload my child's photo?
